Het Brits handalfabet is tweehandig. De oorsprong is onbekend. De oudst bekende afbeelding staat in het boek 'Digita Lingua' en dateert uit 1698, de auteur is anoniem. Het Brits handalfabet wordt ook wel gebruikt in het Brits Gemenebest: Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland, India, Schotland, Zuid-Afrika en Canada.
